What is it?

If you are an outdoors enthusiast and have never worn merino wool socks, you are missing out on a game-changing piece of gear. No matter what your favorite hobby is, I highly recommend upgrading your wardrobe to include socks from Smartwool.

What sets it apart?

Merino wool is a natural fiber from a breed of sheep. It is thinner and softer than regular wool, making it more comfortable to wear. It has many benefits, including regulating body temperature, minimizing moisture buildup from sweat and canceling odor. Smartwool makes socks for all outdoor activities, including biking, running, hiking, hunting, fishing, skiing, snowboarding and regular old everyday wear. It also has designs with varying levels of comfort and warmth. While you certainly have your choice of merino wool companies, Smartwool produces a very high-quality product for a reasonable price. Furthermore, as outdoors lovers, it is fulfilling to purchase from a company that has missions and projects to make the world a better place. It has a blog and many educational videos dedicated to these goals.

How do I use it?

I recommend having a variety of options depending on where you live and what activities you do. I pick my style based on the conditions, my activity and the shoes I am wearing them with. Because of the amazing qualities of merino wool, I find I can wear the same socks for multiple days if I am trying to pack light.

How much?

$15 – $30, depending on height, cushion level and activity type (They run great sales a few times a year, and I often find them on sale at outdoors retail shops.)

Joanna’s insight:

As a very active person I swear by Smartwool socks for all my hobbies. I have running socks, hiking socks, ski socks and everyday socks from Smartwool. I love that no matter the temperature outside they keep my feet comfortable in my shoes or boots. They keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. They are also the reason I have never gotten a blister, even after a 12-hour hiking day in the backcountry. Because they wick moisture with their unique technology, they prevent moisture buildup and therefore prevent any rubbing. While there are other merino wool brands out there, you need to pay close attention to the percentage of merino wool in their products. I know with Smartwool that I am getting a great product that will last years — yes, years. I have had some of my hiking socks for four years now. It might be time for a shopping spree.
