The Best Cold Water Fishing Baits
Kristine Fischer shares three baits that will help you reel in the bites during the colder months.
Hi, guys and gals, Kristine Fischer here with Go Outside. And next, we’re going to talk about three baits that you can fish effectively in cold water. So in the wintertime or early spring, fish a lot of times will decrease their activity and they can sometimes be a little bit more difficult to catch.
So we want to look at baits that are going to be effectively fished in these cold water situations when their metabolism slows and you kind of almost got to force them to eat. So the first bait is going to be a jerk bait. A jerk bait is really unique because of its action and its ability to be
fished very slow or very fast. So a jerk bait can be fished in a variety of different depths. They’re going to stay on the package, what depth this is best for. But the neat thing about this is if you’re fishing clear water, you can fish this in the water column.
And with those fish are below it. They still have the ability to see this bait. The thing about cold water is you want to work it very slow. It’s great for triggering those tight lipped fish in the wintertime.
Next up, we’re going to talk about one of my favorites, a blade bait. Blade baits are really special because they can be fished in heavy current or in open deep water. You can lift them up and down off the bottom.
You can cast and retrieve them. You can fish them in heavy current. And these are going to catch about any species that swims. They’re especially good in that cold water because they’ve got a really tight action and small profile. And this is going to trigger a lot of bites.
Lastly, is a little swim bait with an under spin. So the thing about this bait, you can fish it in deep water or shallow water. You can slow roll it. And it’s got that little bit of a flash that’s going to help fish key in on this bait in certain situations.
It looks very realistic. You can switch up the size of the paddle tail, depending on what species you’re going after and where you’re fishing to try to match the main forage in that lake. So those are three of my favorite cold water or wintertime baits that catch a lot of different species and will get bit when other things won’t. So get yourself a couple of those baits. Get out there and go catch em’.
