Simple 7: Fall Fishing Techniques
Jimmy Kennedy shares his favorite baits to catch fish during the crisp fall months.
00;00;15;53 – 00;00;28;28
Hey, everybody, Jimmy Kennedy here with Go Outside. And we’re on one of our favorite lakes here in Vermont. A little reservoire. It’s got some good smallies in it – and we didn’t bring the boat, so it does involve shore fishing.
00;00;28;55 – 00;00;39;57
Now I want to show you seven really good techniques for fishing from the shore or from a boat, but we’re kind of focusing on the shore today. You could be at a farm pond and reservoir like this or even a river.
00;00;40;22 – 00;00;50;33
And these are techniques and baits that work in the fall really well. And a lot of it is just about covering water. But I’ll show you my favorites and you should give them a try. Think they’ll work for you.
00;00;51;49 – 00;01;06;40
The first one. Chatter bait. And this is good all year long. But I love this bait in the fall and– it’s a jackhammer. It’s got a brush hog trailer on it. This thing is just amazing. Throw it. Reel it in.
00;01;06;41 – 00;01;22;02
Pop it off the weeds, and you could cast this thing so far, too, from shore, where you can reach a whole lot of the water, especially smaller farm pond. Chatter baits is number one– not necessarily in that order in which you’re going to produce– you have to kind of, you know, play around to see what’s working that day.
00;01;23;37 – 00;01;34;55
Next one is a little old school- Texas rig worm, and this thing’s been catching fish for a long time. The great thing about it is especially fishing from the shore or even a boat, but especially from the shore.
00;01;35;16 – 00;01;49;12
You throw it out there and you’re not going to get hung up. This Texas rig- it’s got a small weight, not pegged. Throw it out there. Pull this along the bottom. The weeds, woods, rock, anything. And this is – this is old school
00;01;49;13 – 00;02;06;46
Like I said, this thing will catch fish anywhere, any time. This is a fat worm. X-zone fat worm- kind of floats. Get some good action to it. Next one is a lot of people’s favorite, and it’s hard to beat in a farm pond, in a lake, anywhere.
00;02;06;47 – 00;02;21;13
So wacky rigged stick bait– stick bait. This is the X-zone true center. This has got a Nico hook on it. Nico Hook with a little bit of guard on it and throw this out there and just let it sink.
00;02;21;51 – 00;02;38;06
If this doesn’t catch fish, there’s no fish in the pond. This thing will get them. This is a five inch and six inch Sinco or this bait here. It’s it’s all good and just fish it slow. But what actually, one other thing you can do with this — is throw it out there and just skip it across the
00;02;38;06 – 00;02;53;16
top and then kill it. Let it fall. And sometimes that really gets them going. But this is one you want to try anywhere, any time. It’s going to work for you, I promise. Next one, we got a big oh shallow running crank bait.
00;02;53;25 – 00;03;08;19
This is the Rapala brat– this things kind of new and it’s silent and deadly. This thing is killer. We got the chartreuse on today– covers a lot of water. Now- what I used to do on a farm pond–
00;03;08;30 – 00;03;19;02
Grew up in Mississippi and we had a couple of good bass lakes, so they weren’t that big. But you could just walk around the bank parallel to bank with this thing. Catch monster large mouth on this thing. It’s great for shore
00;03;19;03 – 00;03;38;19
fishing, for sure. The next one is a jackal rhythm wave swim bait, and this is one of my favorite baits– fish it all year long. This is a smaller one here. We’ve got some pretty good sized ones too.
00;03;39;01 – 00;03;56;47
This thing? Look at the action on it. Another idea here is to cover water. Throw this out in the middle of a pond and bring it back and you’re going to catch a fish. And swim bait– throw your favorite swim bait on and can’t go wrong with it, I throw it on a spinning reel. And then another
00;03;56;47 – 00;04;14;04
old school bait got a big old chartreuse terminator here, and it’s fall– chartreuse is the color you want to be throwing, especially for Smallies. They’re going to eat this thing up. It is heavy. It’s a half ounce. You could throw it all the way across most ponds, especially on a good bait caster and just reel it. Try a
00;04;14;10 – 00;04;26;42
few different ways. You can reel this real slow – kind of slow roll along the bottom- and then you can take this thing and just burn it across the top where you can see it, you want to be able to see the blades turning it, and you’ll see them just disappear and then you’ll feel the fish.
00;04;27;02 – 00;04;38;16
So try a couple of different, you know, retrieves and see which ones work in that day. But like a windy day like this, I’d probably even try to go to the middle of the water column. Just kind of see what happens. And that’s six of them right there.
00;04;38;18 – 00;04;50;17
Six techniques for catching good fish, large mouth or small mouth in the fall from the shore from a boat kind of makes me want to go fishing. Charlie’s got one more. He wants to show us too– go make it
00;04;50;17 – 00;05;09;34
seven. Hey, everybody, so this is Charlie here. He is a fishing machine. He out fishes me every time we go fishing, don’t you? Yeah, he does. And I’ve showed you my six favorite fall techniques, rods and reels. I believe this is probably yours isn’t it.
00;05;09;59 – 00;05;24;31
Nightcrawler. Yeah. I mean, I know you know how to use all this other stuff, too, but this is a great alternative to a hard bait, soft bait, just good old Nightcrawler, even a minnow. He’s got some lead on here to keep it down, and he’s probably caught several of these already.. he’s a little guy.
00;05;24;34 – 00;05;40;04
So that’s our simple seven today. We had the chatter bait- the crank bait- the stick bait- soft stick bait– the Texas rig– what the swim bait– the spinner bait– and of course, the good old Nightcrawler. You ready to go fishing for real now?
00;05;40;47 – 00;05;43;39
All right. We’ll see you guys next time. We’re going to go catch some fish.
