Reel Maintenance With John Deshauteurs
Take care of your reels with these easy tips.
Hey folks, how’s it going?
Liam, Nathan, and
I want to welcome you
all back to Go Out{side} and
just show you what we got going on
out here on the table.
So I’ve been doing a
lot of fishing lately.
Saltwater, freshwater and
I’ve been teaching my boys, you know,
clean up behind yourselves so they
keep asking me how I clean
up behind myself and
I figured why not show you guys too.
So one of the most
important things you can do to
give your reels your fishing reels life
when you’re you know when you’re fishing,
especially kayak fishing like I do.
You’re so close to the water though.
One of the best things you can do
is just properly
maintaining your reels, it’s OK.
What I mean by that is rent some off
weather going freshwater saltwater.
Simply rinse em off with freshwater,
let em dry and use.
Can I see this for a second Bubba
and use this little
needle applicator for some oil on your
gears and your bearings?
Real simple.
What’s up?
You done talking?
Can I watch ’cause
I want Nathan to have a turn?
Or all three going to
be able to have a turn.
Which one alright do you want to do?
The Red one or the black one?
You want to do the red one,
why not the black one or the green one?
I want the red one
Well pick that one that was yours.
Alright, so guys
as you can see here
I’ve got this kit here that
I’ll probably go through
every two months.
I’ve got my grease.
I’ve gotta brush.
I’ve got the tools
where I actually explode
the reels out completely apart
and clean everything out.
We’re not doing that today,
just wanted to show you guys the type of
cleaning that can be done simply
what we’re doing today
is using Nathans favorite tool,
the one the one Drop Needle applicator.
Liam, do you want to do yours first?
You want me to do my first?
You want to Nathans first, alright?
So we’re going to
Liam’s first first thing we need to do.
Can I see? Can I show you how to do it?
First thing we need to do?
This is a low profile baitcaster.
We’re going to take our
line clip off there that
keeps us our line maintain there
will pull the side plate
off the side door.
So that door slots to the site that
allows you to access your spool.
So you pull your spool off of your real.
I like to put a lot of fishing line on my
on my reels so you pull your
spool off and I like to
use a napkin in case
I have any loose parts.
It’s sitting right there on that
white napkin and I have access to it.
So as you can see here my side plate
is right there on
the inside of my side plate.
You see that little
round thing that’s a bearing
and this is where
we’re going to use some oil.
Nathan you want to
help Daddy with the oil?
Yeah, OK, so you turn it upside down.
And you squeeze it just a
little bit right there.
Look at that.
You see that drop come out.
Pretty cool, huh?
That’s all it takes, so that’s
on the side door.
That’s where your brakes are.
And then on your spool you should
have a bearing as well.
Look man, I see that bearing right there
he will do the same thing again.
Well go ahead.
Now you gotta put the oil on it.
Just a little bit of oil on the bearing.
You see the oil coming out Liam?
Boom right there.
So with that being said.
We’ve got.
Our little pinion gear right there, you
see that little worm gear
that’s at Pinion Gear worm gear
you wanna drive?
Yeah you try it.
You pull the cap off.
Got it.
And then right there right there,
where the little teeth are
looks like little grooves.
You just put a little bit of oil on it.
You gotta squeeze in just a little bit.
A little bit harder.
Little bit harder.
You got it.
Here I help you.
Yeah, we’ll do the green when next.
Alright, so that’s one drop on the
gear there and then we’re done.
So all you do when you’re putting
you heard an animal
yeah, we’re outside you’re going to
hear that I don’t know
what kind of animal that was mostly.
Alright, so quick tip for
you guys on your baitcasters
take your spool.
Figure out which way
goes back on your baitcaster.
Take your main line
through the side door and go
ahead and slide it through your guide.
Pull that out.
Pull a little bit
of tension inside, yeah?
Put a little bit of tension
and go ahead and
slide it back on the inside.
Put your side door back on.
Just go ahead and roll it.
Make sure everything is going good on it.
Now. That’s the bait caster.
This spinning reel is so
much easier so you
got your spinning real.
You’re just going to come to the top
of your spinning reel and
where your drag dial
is you’re going to back
it all the way out.
Did you know that it would do that?
William, you didn’t know that
it would do that.
So when you get your.
Your cap loose boom,
that’s pretty cool, isn’t it?
You see how that goes up and now.
So salt, water and
all that fresh water will get
in there and corrode all of that
smooth metal out and it’ll mess it up.
Can I put some oil on that?
No, I can’t put oil on that.
Crazy wanna try it
like this like this.
Now turn it.
See how that moves really smoothly.
You gotta put oil on
it to make sure that it stays that way.
Can Liam try it?
OK, let him try it.
Alright, So what
I’m showing the boys now.
Real smooth and ATC.
Alright, so we’ve got this arm here.
That the body of the spinning reel goes
up and down, and
that actually adds your line.
We’re going to do is take
a drop of oil and drop
it on that shaft right there.
I sometimes do too,
and while that’s on that shaft
I’ll just slowly just.
Work that in.
And that is as much maintenance as
I do on my trips.
Take your spool.
You gonna try to put
it off alright, yeah?
You gonna?
Alright, and here you go Liam, watch.
This is the direction you want to turn
it just like that.
So it starts to get tight.
And it’s really that simple,
just a little bit of oil.
A little bit of maintenance.
It’ll keep your reels going
Is it getting tight?
Alright, now hold it like that.
It was like I showed you how to hold it.
And then turn your arm turn.
Turn your handle there
There you go.
Is it so smooth?
Not making any noise.
Fellow
so spinning so fast.
You gotta try it.
Alright, that simple.
So Liam asked me how I
clean up behind myself.
Just showing you guys how I do it.
We’re just getting outside
getting some things done having some fun.
Can you say bye?
Bye bye bye bye.
