Best Baits For Fishing Grassy Waters
These four baits will help you catch fish in the grassiest areas.
Hey, everybody. Kristine Fischer here with Go Outside. And we’re going to talk about one of my favorite ways to fish, and that’s fishing grass.
So a lot of our river systems and lakes across the country have some sort of vegetation.
Sometimes this vegetation can be topped out all the way to the surface. It can be very, very heavy or sparse. And a lot of anglers get frustrated because they keep getting their bait hung up in the grass and they don’t know how to effectively fish those areas.
So I’m going to take you through a couple of baits that are going to make your life easier when it comes to fishing grass.
So first off, we’re going to talk about the obvious. When you’ve got very heavy vegetation that’s often topped out on the surface or heavy pads– you cannot beat fishing a frog.
They make a variety of different frogs, but they’re essentially weedless. You’re going to fish them on top of the water. And they entice some pretty awesome blowups from aggressive fish.
Next up, it’s going to be a swim jig.
You can see that with a swim jig– they come with a heavy weed guard to protect the hook. This is going to allow that bait to come through the grass without getting hung up as much. This bait can mimic shad, bluegill or other baitfish and triggers a lot of big predatory fish into eating.
You can slow roll it or rip it out of the grass.
Speaking of ripping out of grass, there’s not a better baitt out there to do that with than on lipless crank bait. The lipless crank bait– even though it has these exposed treble hooks, comes through the grass very well.
So if you’ve got sparse or even a little bit of heavier vegetation– casting a lipless crank bait out and aggressively ripping it out of the grass is going to trigger a lot of fish and get you bit on a regular basis.
Lastly, a fluke. Rigging a fluke weedless is going to allow you to let this bait get down into deep grass or working around the edges just like a baitfish, twitching it or letting it fall. And you’re going to be able to fish this through the grass without getting hung up, which is going to allow you to get more bites.
So those are four of just my favorite baits to fish grass. You’ve got a couple faster options or some slower options as well, depending on what your style of fishing is. Hopefully that helps you all out to go out there and catch more fish.
